I'm quilting along...

I decided to participate in the quilt along over at Modify Tradition...
My personal rule for it is that I can only use scrap fabric, but I've decided to use the red from the thriftstore in every block to unify it a teensy bit...
so here're the blocks so far.
Broken Dishes:

Eight Hands Around:

(I messed this one up, obvi, putting just about all of the border pieces the wrong way, but I was soooo frustrated with the piecing, that I didn't even care. Of course, after I finished it, I saw the post with the corrected measurements, and felt dumb, but... oh well... Sad b/c I LOVE the teal floral fabric, and that was my last little bit of it... and the center is a super soft piece of one of C's favorite shirts (that I'm cutting down to make into a shirt for D). Below is the same block, turned 90 degrees)

And here's a corrected Eight Hands Around.
I used the red from the thrift store, and a little bit of white scrap, and the chili peppers were scraps from making the aprons for my aunts...

I'm not a chilipepper person, but I really really love the way this block looks.
like, a lot.

finally done!

I've been working on these for a while, but not consistantly, just in off moments...
I had enough fabric to make 2, so I guess one is for D and one for the bean, for Vday...

the red fabric is from my Gram's stash... some sort of wool-poly blend, I'm guessing... (the lining is some clearance cotton I bought oodles of at the Cotton Shop after last Vday)

these bags used up ALL the fabric, down to the last little inch. but the scrap was the wrong shape to make into one big bag, so I made two...

I just zigzagged the hearts down, no wonder-under or anything... love love love.

what I'm up to...

The kiddos have been sick, and have gotten me sick, and my mom's been in town, so I haven't done much crafting... just a bit of crochet here and there...
I've joined 3 bees though, so I'm super psyched to get cracking, plus I've decided to join the quilt along over at Modify Tradition....
tonight though, instead of sewing, I decided to bring back the rag rug I started last summer....
I bought the "kit" (if a tool and directions count as a kit, I'm using an old sheet from my gram right now as the rag) for my birthday, and have worked on it on and off... it's pretty boring, just a LOT of blanket stitch...
but one of our kittens pees on anything fabric-y that's left on the ground, and our old bathmat was just too smelly, no matter what scent remover I used... so we are bathmat-less until I finish this one.
Its measuring about 10" x 18" right now (I'm guessing)...

here's my bag of rag scrap strips...

I've been busy!

I made all these blankets for the boys of a friend of mine (3 double flannel, 1 flannel/fleece, and 2 hemmed flannel...lots of long straight lines.)

and here's more of the thrifted fabric I got yesterday...
I love this print! soooo fun (and stain-hiding!). It was marked 2 yards/$2, but felt very thick...

I took it home and washed it, and measured it, and it's over 8 yards! I can try all sorts of things with this!!!

I also scored 2 pillowcases with this print(for $1)... I'm gonna have to jump on the pillowcase bandwagon and make some dresses....

more sweaters...

Here're the other two...
the sleeves of this one became these pants
(not sure what to do with the rest of it yet... maybe some hats? (the back is solid like the sleeves)
and this amazing bit of cashmere is still untouched. after the debacle of the orange sweater-to-pants, I'm not ready to cut cavalierly into cashmere tonight (that was fun to write/say in my head, hope you enjoy alliteration too!)
I had this sweater already, sans sleeves from making covers for Xmas hot bags, so I made it into a little dress for the Bean..
and I used a little scrap of flannel to put a little applique on the collar...
...just because...

Wardrobe Refashioning for the Bean

As I mentioned earlier, I had fun at the thrift store yesterday...
I bought 3 wool sweaters to make soaker longies for the Bean.
typically, at least for me, things did NOT go as planned.
I started with this sweater, and cut the arms/neck off to make into pants...

I refused to photograph the 3 pairs of pants that came out looking horribly.
but I made this cute dress out of the body part of the sweater... it's orange and brown, not typically valentine-y, but I thought it might work till next fall...
the front has elastic shirring so it can stretch over her giant head, but not fall off her tiny shoulders.
and the back has a pleat...
the sleeves got chopped down so many times (THREE FAILS! BOOOOOOO!!!!!) that now they're wrist warmers for my mom.
yeah, that's what I intended all along...
(sigh)

Loving thrift stores!

I really wantto make more wool soaker for the bean, so headed to the
thrift store today (1/2 off apparel! $3/extra large cashmere sweater!
What baby wouldn't want to wear cashmere pants! (with enough left over
for a matching jumper!!!!)
I also found this awesome fabric. 16 yards for $16! The two pink ones
clearly coordinate, and the red one if PERFECT for valentines day, as
it's a vine pattern with teeny hearts. I think I might make more
silhouettes with the red and a white under.
All of these appear to have been just put out today. Lucky me!!! (I've
figured out the thrifting-with-kids secret. Make them hunt for a toy.
Cost me $.50 for a little teddy bear, but I got to look to my hearts
content!

WIP Wednesdays

ummm, so I'm making some large swaddling blankets for a friend, and C is out of town, and the kiddos are both sick (snotty, runny noses/hacking cough... I can't WAIT till they're old enough to take cold medicine!!!) so I'm not getting all that much done...
I was inspired by the Made by Rae tutorial to finally refashion one of C's old shirts into a shirt for D. but I'm going to put a real collar on it...
I've managed to cut one front piece so far, so I'll be able to use the hem/buttons, yay! I'm going to do a short sleeve, b/c D is just like his papa, and insists on rolling sleeves up, so WHY BOTHER MAKING THEM!?!?!?
I've also been knitting some photo props for said friend, and.... well, I guess that's it...

A very intent stare...

I'm knitting right now, and Kieran reeeeeeeeeeaaaallyyyyyyyyyyy wants
to "help" me.
